FAQ 5 What companies can offer practicums? A trainee may be placed in any company able to offer the following learning conditions: - A ready and willing training supervisor Trainees need a resource person who can help them learn. This person need not have teaching experience but he or she must have the necessary professional competence and skills and a desire to pass these on to trainees. The training supervisor must also have the communication skills required to explain tasks and work methods to trainees and must be allowed sufficient time to supervise their work. (see FAQ 9). - A cooperative staff To ensure the best possible learning conditions, trainees need a welcoming work environment that facilitates their integration into the company and their work team. Trainee integration is easier when company employees are informed of the company’s participation in a work-study program and understand the trainees’status and the company’s role in training them. - Accessible equipment It is important that the company and the school have a clear understanding about access to equipment. The school must be very clear about its expectations regarding trainees’ use of the company’s equipment for learning purposes, and the company must also be clear about its intentions regarding use of its equipment and the conditions under which trainees will have access to it. - A safe work environment The company must be able to guarantee trainees safe working conditions and a safe workplace. Trainees have everything to gain from placement in a company that offers the learning conditions outlined above, no matter what the sector of activity, the size of the company or whether the employees are unionized. |
