FAQ 8   What are the roles and responsibilities of the company, the school and the trainee?    

Being a partner in a work-study program means taking responsibility for part of a trainee’s education. Roles and responsibilities of the company, the school and the student must be clearly spelled out.

     The company’s roles and responsibilities

-     Help to develop the content of the Training Plan

-     Appoint a supervisor and make sure he or she is informed of the agreement and of his or her role and duties (See FAQ 9)

-     Facilitate integration of trainees

-     See that the Training Plan is carried out

-     Comply with practicum conditions agreed upon with the school

-     Inform company employees and unions of the terms and conditions of trainee placement (See FAQ 6)

-     Provide a safe work environment and safe working conditions

-     Ensure that the trainee is evaluated as agreed

-     Participate in the evaluation of the work-study program 

     The school’s roles and responsibilities 

-     Give the company detailed information about the conditions of the work-study program 

-     Inform the company of its role and responsibilities 

-     Work with the company to develop a Training Plan for the trainee 

-     Prepare students for their practicums (skills, attitudes, behaviour)

-     Formalize agreements on civil and legal liability

-     Provide support for the company and the supervisor: additional information, advisory    services, assistance if problems are encountered during the practicum 

-     Give the company the materials and literature necessary for trainee integration, monitoring and evaluation

     The trainee’s roles and responsibilities

-     Work actively to carry out the Training Plan (the student has primary responsibility for his or her learning) 

-     Perform activities, tasks and work required under the Training Plan safely and responsibly 

-     Check with his or her supervisor before taking initiative regarding work requested 

-     Comply with company rules, regulations and policies 

-     Respect the way the company operates

-     Not disclose confidential information learned during the practicum 

-     Inform the company and the school in case of absence or lateness

-     Immediately report any accident or error to his or her supervisor
