Program Objectives

This program trains individuals to become interior designers who can create, develop and suggest functional and aesthetic interior design concepts for residential, commercial and industrial buildings as well as public institutions. They prepare working drawings and help coordinate design work. They must also ensure the quality of the project and conformity with applicable codes and standards.

Interior designers work for interior design companies, real estate developers, architectural firms, furniture stores, decor centres, kitchen cabinet manufacturers, etc. These specialists can also be self-employed.

Interior designers increasingly rely on computer technology. These individuals use word processing software, spreadsheets and computer-assisted drawing and design software for tasks involving drawing, planning and executing plans and specifications. They use the Internet to conduct searches on materials, finishes and various other components.

Depending on their position, and the nature and scope of a given project, interior designers must communicate with several people, including clients, architects, engineers, entrepreneurs, property owners, lighting specialists, acoustics specialists, artists, artisans and suppliers of specialized services (upholstery, sewing, furniture, materials and accessories, etc.). They also deal with colleagues such as designers, graphic artists, researchers and draftspersons. Their work environment requires communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills. When practicing their profession, interior designers must demonstrate autonomy, the ability to analyze and synthesize, and the ability to plan and organize. As new trends are constantly emerging, they must be creative, innovative and have the ability to adapt to change.
